Grade 2
Welcome to Grade 2 !
Second grade is an exciting year of growth and independence as students build confidence in their skills and begin to think more deeply about the world around them. Our curriculum combines Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA), Illustrative Mathematics (IM), and a strong focus on social–emotional learning (SEL) to support the whole child.
Through CKLA, students strengthen their reading fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary while exploring engaging topics in history, science, and literature. They become more confident writers by practicing clear sentence structure, organizing ideas, and expanding their ability to express themselves.
With Illustrative Mathematics, second graders develop a strong foundation in number sense, addition and subtraction within 1,000, place value, measurement, time, money, data, and early concepts of geometry. They are encouraged to explain their reasoning, explore multiple strategies, and build problem-solving skills that prepare them for higher-level math.
Social–emotional learning is woven into daily classroom life. Second graders learn important skills such as cooperation, empathy, self-regulation, and conflict resolution. They practice setting goals, developing resilience, and building positive relationships with peers.
Second grade is a pivotal year where children transition from “learning to read” to “reading to learn,” while gaining the independence, responsibility, and confidence that will carry them forward in school and beyond.
